The Statutory Instrument providing protection from unauthorised interference under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, The Protection of Wrecks (Designation No. 4) Order 1997, defines the protected area to be in position Latitude 50° 12'.696 North, Longitude 03° 44'.679 West with a 250 metre exclusion around that position, excluding any part of that area which lies above the high-water mark of ordinary spring tides. This area is bound by the red circle on the chart. The Historic Wreck Site shown is the Moor Sands Site, which is not related to the Salcombe Canon Site.
A few canon, a couple of anchor, and not much else. To dive, the site is a typical south Devon second dive; gullies, sandy areas, wrasse and kelp. There is no wreck, at least, not on the seabed, and to date we have not found much actual ships structure below it.
No. Only those granted a licence by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The licence sets out the terms of site operations, and those who can dive the site. Currently SWMAG hold the licence.
