Merchant Seal from the Salcombe Canon Site
Merchant Seal
Salcombe Canon Site

The inspiration for our Logo comes from the mark on the merchant seal found on the Salcombe Canon Site. The seal clearly shows the letter M with the letter R on one stem and a horizontal bar on the other. We are not sure if this represents the letter T or a cross. Nestled in the arms of the M is a diamond. Bear in mind that the seal in the wax will be a mirror of the image seen here. The seal has a brass handle, which for the time, circa 1635, indicates wealth and therefore belonged someone of importance.

The letters M and R also appear in a mark on the bottom of a pewter bowl recovered from the site, though this time they are in a heart shape either side of a crown above either an animal head or a shield. Once again, this object indicates wealth.

Our initial thought was that these two items with such clear markings would lead us to the identity of MR, and hence the ship. However, despite our best efforts we still do not know who MR was or where he or she came from. Research has been carried out at various guilds throughout Europe without success. We would be extremely pleased to hear from anyone who can identify the marks and/or suggest a line of research.
